Welcome! I’m Dr. B, or just B.

I’m a mom first and foremost, to two wonderful young boys (who sometimes drive me a little crazy)! Out of respect for their privacy and a desire not to embarrass them more than I already have, I’ll just refer to them as Kid 1 and Kid 2.

I’m a medical doctor by profession. If you asked my family and lifelong friends, they’d probably tell you that I’ve always been pretty science-y. Whenever adults asked Young Me what I wanted to be when I grew up, I’d either say that I didn’t know or list off about a million different possibilities. And yet, people frequently told me that they saw me as a doctor. I guess they were right!

I live and practice in the United States, so readers from other countries may notice that our version of health care is quite different from most other countries. That’s not a defense of our health care system, just an explanation.

Finally, I specialize in public health. I was drawn to public health because we have an opportunity not only to prevent some diseases, but to help large populations instead of treating one person at a time after they’ve already become sick.

I love medicine and public health, but my favorite thing about my job is explaining complex medical topics to help people make healthy choices. I think of myself as a kind of translator: I read and analyze the science and then explain the key “take-aways” in plain language. If that’s something you’re interested in, then I hope you’ll follow me! Feel free to comment on my latest post with medical questions you’d like me to answer or topics you’d like me to cover.

🙂 Dr. B
